This document contains information on setting up and installing the release of our Kiosk Application for Android. This application will run on any Android device that meets our hardware and software requirements.
In the future, the same app will run in the application layer of a customized HootBoard Android operating system that is currently in early development.
Hardware/Software Requirements
- Android Version: 7 (API 24) or later.
- Minimum Display Resolution: 1280 x 800
- Minimum RAM: 2 GB
Installation
NOTE: Screenshots provided here are examples for you. In your device, the UI might be different.
Download the APK file from here: Google Drive Link
You can use your preferred file manager app to locate the downloaded APK file.
If the file manager app doesn't have permission to install APK files, you might need to change the settings. Follow the instructions on the screen to give permission.
Install the APK.
Launching
Open the app from your launcher.
This application is designed to serve as both a regular app and a launcher. That way, when the device is rebooted, or the Kiosk app is restarted, the app will be re-opened automatically.
To set the app as the launcher, press & hold the app icon to bring up the App Info option.

Permissions
The application requires accurate location and camera permissions to operate effectively. Upon installation and initial launch, granting both permissions for the app to function properly is important. The app will not be able to operate if permissions are not granted.
As you step into the OS, the HootBoard welcome screen warmly greets you. Look out for the "Setup My HootBoard" button – your gateway to embark on this exciting journey. A single click is all it takes to get started.
New to HootBoard
Let's see about "I'm new to Hootboard ". Opting for "I'm new to HootBoard" takes you through a series of steps. First, verify your email using a verification code sent to your inbox. Then, choose your organization type
Creating a New HootBoard
The journey starts here. Select your organization type – we offer a diverse array of options, all displayed in the image below. Find the one that fits your organization best; it's the key to tailoring your board to match your needs precisely.
Social Handles & Kiosk Location
Move on to inputting your Google My Business and Instagram handles. These will fetch your organization's logo, name, and location. Check and edit the details if needed.
Next, accurately mark your kiosk's position on the map. This Kiosk location is pivotal for our transit and wayfinding app functionality. While the default marking is typically accurate, it's wise to double-check for precision.
Craft Your Board
Get ready to customize! Choose colors for apps and buttons that resonate with you. We'll suggest colors from your logo, but feel free to switch them up to match your branding.
And don't forget to name your kiosk – something that echoes its role, like "Office Cafeteria Kiosk" or "University Kiosk." It's all about adding your unique touch!
The Last Step
After customizing, tap "Create Board." Watch as your HootBoard springs to life, filled with apps that match your organization type. They're drenched in your chosen colors, showcasing your logo and kiosk name.
Freemium Plan
As a new user, you start in the freemium plan, offering 1000 engagement units. Feel free to upgrade as needed for expanded functionality.

Already an Admin? Let's Dive In
Upon successful verification, you'll face the question: "How would you like to proceed?" Choose your pathway from the below three options:
Enter Screen ID:

Unlocking Screen ID Magic: The Screen ID setup is your go-to when you possess an existing HootBoard with a Screen ID.

Entering the ID: You'll receive a prompt to enter the pre-generated Screen ID. After successful verification, the board linked to this Screen ID and the kiosk will seamlessly pair up.

One ID, One Kiosk: Keep in mind, that each Screen ID is exclusively for one kiosk. For multiple kiosks, set up distinct boards and generate fresh Screen IDs for each.

Select a HootBoard
- Opting for this choice, you'll find all your HootBoard-created boards conveniently displayed in one location.
- Verify your HootBoard Account to proceed.
- After successful verification, you can see all your associated boards.
- Choose a board from the list to pair it with this screen.
- Confirm your selection and the kiosk will align with your chosen board, instantly displaying it on the screen.
Create a New HootBoard
- There are moments when a new HootBoard is the way to go. This option lets you create a fresh HootBoard under your existing account, perfect for those times when a clean slate is just what you need.
- Selecting it directs you to organization type selection, setting the foundation for your new HootBoard. For more detailed steps, click here.
Admin Controls
Certain admin options are hidden from the Kiosk user. To open the admin menu, you can:
- Tap on the HootBoard logo 6 times from the welcome screen.
- Tap on the board logo 6 times once the Kiosk is connected to a Screen ID.
The default passcode for the admin menu is 000000
Make sure to change it once the device is set for the first time.
Note: The keyboard won't work for the passcode.
If your device has root access, the app might ask for elevated permissions to work correctly.
If root access is granted, certain features like Reboot Device option will be enabled.
Root permission is optional to run the Kiosk app.
If you have multiple cameras connected to the device, make sure to set the primary camera from the admin settings.
If you want to change the Screen ID that is connected to the Kiosk, you can reset it from admin menu.
Device info will provide additional information regarding the app & the device. This is useful for debugging purposes.
Updates
Software updates will only appear in the admin menu after you open it. When a new version is available, the UI will display a notification.
Click the option to view more details about the update.
Click Install Update to update the software.
If the HootBoard Kiosk app lacks installation permissions, it may ask you to enable them in Settings.
Follow the on-screen instructions to grant the necessary permission. Once enabled, the operating system will prompt you to confirm the installation.
After installation is complete, the app will restart.
Customization
The application follows the pixel density of the device. If you modify the Display & Text size within the Android settings, the app will dynamically adjust its layout accordingly.
You can find these settings from the Display Settings of your device.
An in-built keyboard is bundled with the app. To enable it,
Go to Keyboard Settings from the Settings app.
Disable all other keyboards & Enable HootBoard Keyboard.
Go back to the app & tap on any input field.
Change the input method to HootBoard Keyboard & enable the virtual keyboard option.
The HootBoard Keyboard is ready to use.
Features not available
As the application is currently in the early stages of development, certain features are not yet available. Below is a list of some of these features:
- Default attractor loops.
- List functionality.
- Offline mode.
- Remote management.
- “Send this to me” option in the Hoot display view.
